Registration now open for Third International Comics Conference in Bournemouth!

This is an event that some of you might be interested in attending. It’s going to be held on the 28–29th of June 2012 at Bournemouth University. There’s an early bird discount available until the 30th of April, as well as a student/postgrad rate. If you are interested in going, they recommend you book early, as Bournemouth is a sea-side town and tends to book up quickly in the summer. More info from the email below:

The current price for the whole event is just £55 for students/postgrads, £95 for all presenters (whether you are doing a paper, poster or pecha kucha session), and £105 for everyone else.  That’s for two whole days of comics and conferencing, including lunch and refreshments, as well as a journal subscription!

Register at: http://comicsconference-eorg.eventbrite.com/ or via the link on our conference website: http://www.comics.bujournalism.info.

The conference venue is BU’s Executive Business Centre, 89 Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth, BH8 8EB.  It’s very close to the train station.  There are links on the conference website to local tourist pages where you will find lists of suggested hotels and B&Bs.

We have already confirmed David Lloyd and Steve Marchant of Cartoon Classroom as keynote speakers for our Comics and Education day, and are in the process of confirming our keynotes for the Comics and Adaptation day – watch this space!  We will also be holding the first UK screening of Todd Kent’s award winning documentary Comic Book Literacy, and are finalising the rest of our programme as we speak – more details will be posted on our website within the month.

Please just get in touch (email comicsconference@gmail.com) if you have any queries.  You can find the full list of costs here: http://comicsconference-eorg.eventbrite.com/.  Prices include lunch and refreshments, and the two-day rate also includes a journal subscription from Intellect or Routledge (either Studies in Comics or Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics, or additional titles tbc).

Team Girl Comic at Mono

I’ve been part of an all-female comic collective called Team Girl Comic. It’s an anthology of women artists, open to any and all levels and ages of creators. Some of us are showing our comic pieces in Mono and there’s going to be an exhibition launch party on Thursday, Feb 23rd. I won’t be showing a piece, but I’ll be there. Come on over for comics chat, a drink and draw, and Team Girl DJs. And no, I will not be subjecting you to my musical tastes, don’t worry. It’s the same day as the comics part of the Glasgow Film Festival. Denise Mina, Kate Brown, Penny Sharp and Gillian Hatcher will be giving a talk on Women in Comics at 3:15 as well, which might be of interest to some of you.

(And if any of you lasses are interested in being part of upcoming issues and having some of your work published, get in touch!)
